Dinner at The Hare & Hounds, Bath

The Hare & Hounds is one of our absolute favourite pubs in Bath. With an incredible view over into the valley and food to match, it's one of Bath's favourites too.

A couple of days ago, we went down to review their dinner menu.

We ordered a bottle of our favourite white wine, Sancerre, and got stuck in.

Excitingly, it's not just your classic pub food. The Hare & Hounds has a lot of pub classics, but they also have dishes with an international twist, for example the salmon fillet with an Asian vegetable salad and ginger & lime dressing, or the Moroccan vegetable tagine.

The Sancerre (Domaine des Vieux Pruniers) was very nice. A very light, crisp wine with underlying notes of lime. [£29.90]

For our starters, we decided to go for a couple of sharing & antipasti boards.

On the left is the antipasti board with serrano ham, chorizo, manchego, olives, grilled marinated vegetables and ciabatta πŸ§€πŸ₯“ [£16]

This was so wonderful and fresh. The meat was high quality, and the manchego (a Spanish sheep cheese) was really tasty - as good as the cheese we've had in Spain. The olives were fresh and juicy, and the board came with a good helping of rocket & semi-sundried tomatoes which went really well with the manchego. The ciabatta was great to either have separately or to make little open-faced sandwiches for yourself.

The one on the right is the selection of hobbs house breads with pesto, hummus, olive oil and balsamic 🍞🌿 [£6]

There was a nice selection of a couple of different breads, which came with the most amazing freshly-made hummus and pesto. These also went great with the antipasti board, so we would suggest maybe ordering them together - the pesto went really well with the manchego for example 🀩.

Home-made hummus is difficult to get really smooth unless you take the chickpea skins off (a laborious process), and this one had the perfect texture.  The olive oil was slightly disappointing, however.

Then came the main courses.

On top is the 6oz prime beef burger with cheese, mayo, bacon and a side of coleslaw & skinny fries πŸ”πŸ₯“πŸŸ [14.50]

To quote "one of the best burgers I've ever had". A really juicy patty which was well-charred & grilled without there being any weird excess burger juices (we all know which ones we're talking about).

The bacon was nice and crispy and the burger had a good amount of condiments in it - pickles, lettuce, tomato. The skinny fries were *so good*. Really, really crispy and salted to perfection.

We also had the slow-roasted tomato risotto with roasted courgette, basil, pine nuts and Somerset goats curd πŸ…πŸŒΏ [£14]

Normally, when vegetarians look for veggie options on the menu and see a risotto, they groan because of the lack of choice and/or it being restaurants' only go-to veggie option.

Thankfully, The Hare & Hounds had a couple of different options to choose from but this risotto looked & sounded fabulous. And it was!

The rice was well cooked, and the risotto was bursting with different vegetable flavours. It was a great portion size, and the toasted pine nuts added extra flavour and texture to the dish. I personally don't like goats curd at all so avoided that, but it looked really fresh and even without the cheese, the whole risotto was fantastic. We would highly recommend it as a veggie option.

Because we had eaten so much food, we decided to skip dessert (sadly - because they look incredible).

🌟 The atmosphere at the Hare & Hounds is great. It's a cosy pub with lots of room for many diners, creating a lively yet comfortable and intimate space. The best thing about the pub is probably the incredible view. It's one of the best in Bath & looks down into the valley.

🀡🏻 We were greeted with a friendly smile & had an attentive server all night who was knowledgeable about all dishes.

🐢 Dog & child-friendly!

🌿 Lots of vegetarian & gluten-free options which were marked clearly on the menu. No vegan options, however many of the veggie options could be made vegan - just ask one of your servers.
