Dinner at The Bouvardia Restaurant at Bathen House, Bath

Open since April 2018, Bathen House is a luxury hotel. The Edwardian property underwent extensive redevelopment, providing a mixture of 12 rooms and suites, as well as a recently opened new restaurant ‘The Bouvardia’. 

The menu has 2 or 3-course set menu options and is quite concise, showing the detail that has been put into creating each dish. The hotel itself is beautiful, and we were promptly given menus when we were seated.

For wine, we went for an Australian Chardonnay and the highly recommended house red, the Elevé Carignan which was beautifully smooth to drink. When it came to ordering the food, we both decided to go for the same starter because it sounded so delicious.

Duck served with asparagus & butternut squash pûrée 🍗

The duck was served beautifully pink. The asparagus was perfectly al dente and the sweetness of the smooth pûrée added extra flavour to the duck. It was very well presented and executed, we were glad we both had our own portion!



Moving onto mains...

Monkfish wrapped in pancetta, served with herbed potato pûrée and an onion & balsamic relish 🐟

The monkfish was lovely and thick and the potato was creamy and smooth. The pancetta was a lovely addition to the dish and gave the fish a meaty, but not too salty, flavour.

Braised beef served with pancetta, potato rösti, broccoli pûrée and a mushroom sauce 🥩

This was absolutely delicious! The meat was beautifully tender and had been slow-cooked for 4 hours. The rösti was crunchy and almost caramelised (yum) and the broccoli pûrée was incredibly smooth and delicious. 



Cashew & raspberry vegan cheesecake ✨ 

This had an almond taste to it, almost like marzipan. It was very thick and the base was really lovely and nutty. We really liked this and it was amazingly tasty for a vegan dessert; although don’t expect your New York cheesecake!



Amaretto crème brûlée ✨ 

Once again, the presentation was stunning. It was beautifully smooth and you could really taste the Amaretto. It was served with ice cream which gave the dish an added freshness to it. (Pictured behind).


The restaurant had a lovely warm, relaxed, and friendly atmosphere & the service was very good, lovely and attentive. They were more than happy to recommend certain wines and dishes.


The restaurant is definitely worth the extra walk or short drive and there is plenty of parking on the road. We would 100% recommend this restaurant - we couldn’t fault any part of the experience from the service to the dishes and wine. Everything has been carefully thought about and it really shows.



💰 ££-£££. £24.50 for 2 courses & £35.50 for 3 courses. Considering the quality, presentation & experience, it’s good value.
