Takeaway Italian from Dr. Al Forno, Bath

Let’s be honest, it’s been a tough year! While the future is still fairly uncertain and things continue to feel a bit miserable, there is one thing that is sure to improve your mood in the meantime – Italian food!

One positive of recent months has been the adaptability and resourcefulness that we’ve witnessed across local businesses. From changing physical set-ups and figuring out the logistics, to changing approaches entirely and focusing on new things, there has been a lot of creativeness about and we are here for it!

One new lockdown innovation is Dr Al Forno, a Bath takeaway providing Italian street food and specialising in Al Forno dishes. Their authentic and traditional food can be ordered through Uber Eats and Deliveroo or collected from Widcombe.

So this afternoon, with the leaves fading into their Autumn hues and comfort food on the mind, we made the stroll into pretty (although drizzly) Widcombe to collect our order. The food is collected from the side entrance to the White Hart Inn (to the right-hand side if looking at the pub straight on) and just a small distance away from Widcombe High Street.

We sampled three of their dishes – the classic Lasagna, the Pasta Bianca and the Parmigiana (vegetarian and gluten-free). All rounded off with a slice of Chocolate Salami.

Lasagna (layered spinach egg pasta, slow-cooked ragu, bechamel sauce, mozzarella and Grana Padano) [£9]

Just look at those pasta layers. It was super cheesy (filled with oozy mozzarella), the ragù was very tasty and the lasagna held its shape while still being packed full of good things. One of our favourites!

Pasta bianca (bechamel ragu, oven baked pasta, mozzarella & Grana Padano) [£9]

This was another favourite. A little lighter than the lasagna, it’s also baked ‘al forno’ & had a gorgeously crunchy top and was a close contender for our top spot. If you like a creamy sauce then this one’s for you!

Parmigiana (layered aubergine, tomato sauce, mozzarella & Grana Padano) [£9]

This was beautifully cooked but perhaps a little on the salty side.

Chocolate salame (dark chocolate, rum and biscuits) shaped like a salami! [£4]

We finished our feast with a slice of Chocolate Salami which was totally delicious. Almost as decadent as a ganache, the crumbly pudding was really rich, with dark chocolate, rum and bits of biscuit. It’s dusted with icing sugar and makes a convincing ‘salami’! 10/10!

All portions were incredibly generous and collection was very straightforward. Dr Al Forno definitely made a very tasty treat & is great for some hearty, warm Italian food at home.
